About This Attraction
Bahirawakanda Temple, Officially Known As Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya, Is A Prominent Theravada Buddhist Temple Located In Kandy, Sri Lanka. Situated Approximately 2 Kilometers From The City Center In The Suburb Of Bahirawakanda, The Temple Is Renowned For Its Massive White Buddha Statue, Which Stands At 26.83 Meters High, Making It One Of The Tallest Buddha Statues In Sri Lanka.
The Statue Depicts The Buddha In The Dhyana Mudra, A Meditative Posture Associated With His First Enlightenment. This Iconic Figure Is Visible From Various Points Throughout Kandy, Symbolizing Peace And Serenity.
The Temple's Construction Began In The Early 1970s, Initiated By Ven. Ampitiye Dammarama Thero Of The Amarapura Nikaya, On Land Donated By Then Minister Of Lands, Hector Kobbekaduwa. Despite Initial Opposition From Senior Monks Of The Sri Dalada Maligawa, The Temple Was Officially Opened On January 1, 1993, By President Ranasinghe Premadasa
