History of Eswatini (Swaziland)

Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is a small landlocked country in Southern Africa. The history of Eswatini is deeply rooted in the traditions and leadership of the Swazi people. The Swazi people trace their origins back to the 18th century when they migrated from central Africa and settled in the area now known as Eswatini.

The Swazi nation was established under King Ngwane III in the early 18th century, and the kingdom expanded under the leadership of King Mswati II in the mid-19th century. Mswati II is considered one of the greatest Swazi kings and the country is named after him. During his reign, the Swazi people defended their territory from external threats and consolidated their cultural identity.

In the late 19th century, Eswatini came under increasing pressure from European colonial powers. The British established a protectorate over Swaziland in 1903, which lasted until the country gained independence on September 6, 1968. Post-independence, the country retained its monarchy, with King Sobhuza II ruling until he died in 1982. King Mswati III, who ascended to the throne in 1986, is the current monarch.

In 2018, King Mswati III announced the country's official name change from Swaziland to Eswatini, a move to reflect the nation's Swazi heritage and to mark the 50th anniversary of independence.
